Is Kentucky Coffeetree a Good Firewood?
Most people have never even heard of Kentucky Coffeetree, let alone burned it. That's a shame, because at 19.0 million BTU per cord, it's a legitimately good heating wood that flies under the radar. It's rated "good" overall, and once you've had some, you'll keep an eye out for more.
The heat output sits right in the solid hardwood range, not quite up there with the oaks, but close enough that you won't complain. Dry weight is 3,060 lbs per cord, green comes in around 3,872 lbs. Low smoke and few sparks make it a clean burner for stoves and open fireplaces alike. Check the full rankings on our firewood types page.
Splitting is medium difficulty. The wood is hard but usually cooperates with a decent maul. You might hit an ornery crotch piece now and then, but nothing like elm. It has a good fragrance too, pleasant without being overpowering.
Seasoning runs 12 to 24 months, so plan ahead. Anything under 18 months and you should be checking with a moisture meter before you trust it. The thicker pieces especially hold onto water.
Kentucky Coffeetree is limited in availability, found mainly in the Midwest and parts of the Northeast. If a tree service offers you some, take it. It burns clean, holds coals well, and mixes great with other hardwoods. Similar vibe to Black Walnut firewood, another underrated species from the same region.
