Is Hop Hornbeam a Good Firewood?
Most people walk right past Hop Hornbeam in the woods without knowing they're looking at one of the hottest-burning firewoods in eastern North America. Also called Ironwood, and yeah, the name fits. At 26.4 million BTU per cord and a dry weight of 4,250 lbs, this stuff is absolutely packed with energy.
To put that in perspective, Hop Hornbeam actually outperforms Shagbark Hickory and White Oak on the firewood BTU chart. Let that sink in. A tree most people have never heard of beats two of the most famous firewood species going. It holds a coal bed like nothing else I've burned, excellent coals that'll keep your stove radiating heat long after the flames die down.
Now for the bad news. Splitting Hop Hornbeam is difficult. The wood is incredibly dense and the fibers are tough. A maul and wedge will work, but you'll feel it in your shoulders. A hydraulic splitter is the way to go if you've got access to one. Once it's split, though, it burns beautifully, low smoke, few sparks, clean and hot.
Give it 18 to 24 months to season. Don't try to shortcut this. Ironwood is so dense that moisture has a hard time escaping, and burning it green would be a total waste of premium firewood. Split it, stack it off the ground, give it airflow, and let time do its thing.
Hop Hornbeam grows across the northeast, midwest, and southeast, but availability is limited since the trees tend to be small. You won't find cords of it for sale very often. It's more of a "score it when you can" species. Similar vibe to American Beech firewood in terms of being an underappreciated heat powerhouse.
